A Tent of One's Own: 4 Reasons That You Need a Tent Big Enough for the Whole Crew

July 8, 2017

We've all been there, sitting around the campfire and telling stories , drinking our favorite beverages, and enjoying each other's company, when all of a sudden one of the group will grow quiet, stare off into the fire for a few minutes, and then say; "Well, I'm going to turn in... goodnight everyone."

It has always been my experience that the very fact that everyone has their own tent at most camping gatherings drags the party atmosphere down. For your next trip, why not plan to stay in the same tent as a group? This way the party goes on all night. Here are four reasons to get a tent big enough for the whole crew.

1. Ease of maneuver

It is much easier to pitch and manage one tent than it is to try to manage many. It is also easier to traverse one tent that is centrally located in camp than it is to try to stumble amongst a tent city to go to the bathroom.

2. Security

We've all seen the horror movies where a person or couple, isolated from the group in their own tent, is dragged off screaming into the woods and ravaged by some beast... why take the chance?

3. Camaraderie

This has already been covered in the narrative above, but should be re-iterated. The party atmosphere that most camping trips imbue can be kept going all night long if you are all enjoying the same accommodations.

4. Cost effectiveness

For not much more than the price of a personal tent, you can enjoy a military surplus tent large enough for the entire crew. Here's one as an example:

The GP Small (17’6” X 17’6”) is a six-sided pyramidal design equipped with sidewall poles and a center pole. Each side is 8'9" , and the eave height is 5'8" with a center peak height of 10 feet and 3 inches. This GP small tent features a front and rear door with screen doors for flow-through ventilation.

The tents roof is fitted with a stove pipe shield to accommodate a standard 4 inch military heater pipe; it also has two zip-up doors with insect screens. Disassemble or strike time is estimated to be 30 minutes with minimal manpower-four people max. This General Purpose tent is made from a cotton canvas and vinyl material. NSN (8340-00-470-2335)
