As you enjoy this, your first holiday of the Summer of 2018, and you spend time with friends and family, (preferably while camping out in your military surplus Army tent), consider if you would the only battle of World War II that was ever fought on American soil, the Battle of ATTU Island.
It was at this battle that some American soldiers, too slow to emerge from their slumber, were bayoneted to death - while still in their Army tents - by steely eyed enemy soldiers from the land of the rising sun.
The full story can be read in the Army Times, HERE! But here are three things you should always remember when considering the attack of ATTU Island.
1. Never let your guard down. No area is too remote that you don't have to worry about an enemy attack. The defenders at ATTU Island would likely have never believed that anyone could find any reason to find an interest in this remote frozen piece of ice.
2. You might have to face insurmountable odds. You don't get to choose, all of the time, what battles you are going to face or the odds with which you will face them. That's why you should always be prepared to dig in and expect the unexpected, which offers a segue into my last point....
3. Never give up. Ah, the old cliche; however in this instance it is most fitting. Some enemies are not worth giving up to and I think this story is a testimony to one such enemy. As the results of the battle show... there is a remarkable difference between the two factions
